The houses 1-12 Rivergreen, Amble are a distinctive and environmentally responsible development that makes a positive and vital contribution to the character of the environment.

The innovative design creates a scheme of highly distinctive residential properties that respond directly to the exceptional coastal location, creating shelter from the prevailing northeasterly winds, maximizing views from the dwellings in two opposing directions while manipulating the built form to create a gentle transition from the open countryside to the urban development of Amble.

The development has been awarded an EcoHomes Excellent rating by the Building Research Establishment.

"An enhanced and improved Sunniside Gardens that would help raise the profile of the City Centre and become a focus for regeneration activity in the wider Sunniside area".
"It is considered desirable that the essential qualities of the Gardens be sustained into the 21st century but expressed, perhaps, in a more modern idiom".

Utilising the above concepts has led RLD to design a contemporary place for the City and the area. It is one that will help restore confidence to Sunniside and assist the wider regeneration of Sunderland.

The Lakeside Centre is a civic building in the best sense of the word - it enhances the region and the lives of those who live here. Full involvement of the public has helped in the idea of this community leisure centre, the formulation of its contents and in its siting.
Architecturally, the scheme has three elements; a central zone of foyer, fitness, refreshment and viewing areas which binds together the aquatic and sports facilities on either side.

Public reaction to the new facility has been overwhelming. The number of people visiting the centre is well in excess of that anticipated; the target for selling membership for the fitness facility was met within 6 weeks of the buildings launch - a sure sign of the success of this community facility.

A companion pontoon to the South Shields ferry pontoon, part of the Newcastle upon Tyne integrated Rapid Transit System. The design is a collaboration of architects and artist, Wolfgang Weileder. The pontoon was built coincident with a new connecting metro station at Backworth. The reception cetnre at the pontoon was to be reflected by an identical building at Backworth, but upside down.

The structure built from steel and glass produced an elegant and fully transparent waiting space. The roof form to enable the building to be used in an upside down position was a "flat cap" shape made from aluminium in a single piece, by a motorway signage company.

BBHA needed new head offices and land for housing.

They decided to lease a third of the Church to Byker Bridge Housing Association for their head offices. They wanted to create a new Worship area and a Church Hall with new kitchen and toilets.

View short film of this building

Gunnerton is a small village of about 180 people. There are no facilities or amenities apart from the church building, which is listed as grade 2. St Christopher's Church, built in 1900, was based on an award-winning design submitted to the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1898 by J.C Hawes (1876 - 1956) who described it as ‘the best I ever did’. It featured in an article in the British Architect in 1902. Hawes became an Anglican and then a Roman Catholic Priest, and in later life a hermit. He continued to practise as an architect, particularly in Australia.

The Parochial Church Council commissioned Vincente Stienlet to repair and restore the church, but also to provide a meeting area with WC and kitchen at the rear of the building. The church has been restored to its former glory, and now is a community facility for social, education and leisure activities.

Culture Lab

Responding to Newcastle University's brief to create a unique space to encourage cross-faculty, interdisciplinary collaboration, leading North East architects Dewjo'c transformed the interior of Grade II listed building the Grand Assembly Rooms into cutting edge Culture Lab.
The building is a flagship for the University's new cultural quarter. Dewjo'c successfully integrated a highly sophisticated, technical environment within a building of historical and architectural importance, housing facilities including performance and exhibition spaces, recording studios, multi-media laboratories and an electronics workshop.

The design approach recognised the aspirations of the client as well as the needs of the building. Dewjo'c worked within the budget to incorporate the restoration of otherwise hidden historical features.

Dewjo'c worked closely with the client, city council and conservation officers to create a unique, contemporary intervention whilst maintaining the character of the original 1889 building.

The Old House

Dating from the C17th the Old House has been carefully restored and the attached barn converted to provide additional accommodation. The exterior character has been carefully retained by repointing the large chimneys and stonework in lime mortar, and re slating the roofs with local slate.

Internally, the existing oak roof structure has been cleaned and exposed, with new oak floors, doors, panelled screens and kitchen fitments, which compliment the house and enhance the spaces to create a warm atmosphere throughout.

The scheme maintains a discreet presence on the street within the historical context of old Ambleside.

Trinity Gardens (Public Spaces)

View short film of this public space

Situated at the heart of Newcastle Quayside adjacent to the Law Courts, the site had become neglected in recent years, dominated by a large surface car park and flanked by overgrown, intimidating landscaped banks to either side.

Southern Green Ltd was commissioned in Summer 2000 by Silverlink Properties Plc, to contribute to their competitive bid to Newcastle City for the site. The sites of All Saints and Corner Tower area were originally outside the brief from the City Council, however in order to create a truly seamless transition between the Quayside and the city centre and to ensure improved public access, Silverlink opted to incorporate these neglected green outlying areas, and this gave a winning edge to the submission.

OUSEBURN FARM: REVIVAL

Ouseburn Farm has existed for over twenty years. For various reasons, including the fact that the land was contaminated and had to be stripped and replaced, the Farm had closed. This project was to extend the one remaining building, the 1999 timber framed, timber clad meeting room and offices of 100sqm. The new brief was for a demonstrably sustainable extension totalling 520sqm. The building has a minimal environmental footprint, by considering sustainability holistically, by designing with climate and not by just ‘bolting on a few green goodies'.

Waring and Netts was chosen as the architect to start the planned modernisation program for the successful twenty year old Tyne and Wear Metro system. The commission was awarded as the result of a competition to completely redesign and rebuild the waiting room and ticket area using futuristic design concepts.
The project is comprised of an enclosed entrance leading to a glazed brick ticket space and a glazed waiting room with automatic doors on the platform, all covered by a new overhead canopy. The ticket enclosure is constructed with stack-bonded glazed brickwork in-keeping with the existing platform materials.

Pelaw is now a flagship Metro station in terms of design, and due to its success our client, Nexus, plan to roll the bespoke design approach out for other stations on the system.

Archive vaults and plant occupy the basement and conservation is carried out on the mid level. The top level provides a reading room which is the architectural highlight. Scholars from all over the world come to the building to study to Wordsworth's life and those of his contemporaries.
