Cardinal Hume Catholic School
GWK Chartered Architects
Introduction
GWK were commissioned to design a 1200 place, 11-18 year old comprehensive school that would meet modern day teaching and learning requirements and that the new environment should not feel like a "standard school".
A series of sustainable measures were incorporated including; optimally placed vertical solar control louvres to main facade preventing heat gain, yet still allowing significant natural light.
All general teaching spaces naturally ventilated with environmental chimneys. The tower provides a focal point from the Old Durham Road and is a landmark feature for a community school within the neighbourhood.
